OMH Takes Startupfest 2019

Why we loved Startupfest and believe everyone should go!

You know that scene in the Wizard of Oz when Dorothy leaves her dreary grayscale farmhouse and enters the colourful, magical world of Oz? That’s kind of what it felt like, arriving in Montreal. We left behind the high-rises and concrete of Toronto, to visit literally greener pastures.

Startupfest took place at Parc Jean Drapeau and had a vibe closer to a music festival than a conference. Bean bag chairs and pink exercise balls were our office seats, paddle boats floating along the river were our conference rooms. What better way to have a summer meeting?

Bean bag chairs and paddle boats aside, Startupfest is an amazing event for entrepreneurs everywhere to get in front of the right investors. Tent Village was filled with Venture Capitalists and investment funds for startups to freely pitch (our personal favourite being the Grandmother Judges tent).

Everyone must have felt the infectious fun because it was easy to network with the community. You could feel the excitement as attendees chatted about their passions and businesses. Everyone was there for the purpose of making deals, networking and learning a thing or two. No one was off-limits. Startupfest fostered an inclusive, personable, and approachable environment which made it ideal to learn from experienced entrepreneurs.

During the day, Startupfest organized an abundance of workshops, bootcamps and panels. Attendees were able to get exclusive knowledge on topics such as scaling and growing your company, go-to-market strategies, positioning, and hiring.

As a podcast company, we decided to attend the “Founder, Ask Me Anything Session,” moderated by Kareem Maddox. The panel featured successful entrepreneurs, Mallorie Brodie, Carlo Perez, and Meg Athavale. Not only were we inspired, but the insights each panellist gave  were relevant and applicable to our everyday business practices.

Overall, we made some great memories and connections in this amazing community of start-ups. Business was done, fun was had, and we’ll definitely be back next year!
